We all know the kangaroo as Australia’s signature iconic hopper. But did you know that aside from its claim to fame, it is also a culinary ingredient?

According to Men’s Health, kangaroo meat is a better alternative to other common meats on the market, such as beef and lamb. With low fat and high protein content, it’s a healthy and nutritious source of food. And you won’t have to feel guilty about hunting and gobbling up this cute critter, because the Australian government actually encourages it to combat kangaroo overpopulation!

Now that we got that out of the way, here are some ways you can cook kangaroo meat.

Kangaroo Fillet

Here’s a quick recipe that anyone can try at home. It takes as fast as 15 minutes to prepare, and after that you and your friends can indulge in this healthy treat.

First, prepare a heavy, non-stick pan and heat oil. While your doing that, rub salt, pepper, and thyme to both sides of your roo steak. Meanwhile, start mixing sugar and worcestershire sauce and then drizzle half of the mixture over the meat.

Begin the actual cooking by searing the roo meat on high heat for around two minutes on each side to seal juices, then reduce the heat while you cook it until it looks pink.

Kangaroo Steaks in Red Wine Sauce

If you’re feeling a bit fancy, why not try enjoying your kangaroo steak in rich, creamy red wine sauce? It takes a bit of preparation, but the results are definitely worth your while.

Create a marinade by mixing red wine, chives, garlic, and onion. Add kangaroo meat in the mix and toss until fully coated. Cover with cling wrap and refrigerate it for at least two hours, although it would be best to keep it in the marinade overnight to get the most out of the flavor. After which, drain the marinade but reserve it for later use.

Start heating the pan with oil and then cook the kangaroo meat under high heat to seal the sides. After that’s done, remove the roo meat, cover it, and keep it warm. Pour the marinade in the pan and cook under low heat until it boils. Once it has thickened, bring the roo meat back in the mix and cook on low heat until cooked. And you’re done!
